In my
on-going series of beautiful feminine figures, I’ve
portrayed women of differing ethnicities as muses, madonnas
and mysterious dreamers. Typically, these figures
are centered in their own world of serenity and quietude,
and are embellished with auras that burst with brilliant
color and radiant patterns of energy. Sometimes,
children, men and other magical beasts share their enchanted
worlds.
My paintings are magical journeys for me, and creating them
is like solving a puzzle, making visible what my mind’s
eye sees. Oftentimes, background and foreground blend
with the central figure, creating a collage-like effect. My
preferred medium is acrylic on canvas or panel, to which
I occasionally add gold leaf. Recent works such as Summer
Fantasy and Ms M In Purple are
a fusion of pigments and hand-made rice papers.
For inspiration,
I surround myself with beautiful objects such as fabrics,
feathers and fans. Frequently my images
will take on a new direction or additional elements just
through the joyful act of being painted. I often refer
back in history to the works of other artists I admire: for
example, I am inspired by Gustave Klimt’s use of elaborate
patterning and also by Marc Chagall’s luminous dreamscapes.
The purpose of my art is, simply, to create imagery which
celebrates the beauty and spirit of womankind.
